Volunteers are the backbone of the Nā Kiaʻi Kai (Ocean Gurdian) Community Science program. From mauka to makai, there is a role for every skill level.
Volunteer Activities
Fish & limu surveys
Conducting visual census counts of fish populations and tracking native seaweed distribution.
Water quality testing
Sampling local streams and coastlines to check for nutrient spikes, salinity, and runoff contamination.
Shoreline debris removal
Extracting shoreline plastic pollution, microplastics, and heavy ghost fishing nets.
Forage fish hatchery
Transplanting resilient, thermal-tolerant coral fragments onto degraded nearshore reef flats.
Youth education support
Assisting in mentoring local Maui students during outdoor hands-on marine science days.
Community workdays
Joining watershed restoration, clearing stream blockages, and rebuilding traditional fishponds.
Coastal strand/dune restoration
Revitalizing native coastal habitats by restoring native vegetation, removing invasive species, and stabilizing dune systems.
Loko i’a revitalization
Restoring Aina Momona --the land's abundance--by revitalizing traditional Hawaiian fishponds.
